Fourth Sunday of Lent - Mothering Sunday

Welcome to St. Barnabas

We extend a warm welcome to all those who are in Church today and those who are visiting. Today we celebrate Mothering Sunday - we hope you enjoy our worship here and will stay for refreshments after the mass. There is an area in church for young children (2-7 years) with activities. Parents and carers are welcome to use this area.

Toilet facilities are available, please ask for directions.

Please make sure your mobile phone is switched to silent

All of us can celebrate the fact that it was because of our mothers that we have that great gift of life.

Prayers for use before Mass

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ I have come here in obedience to your will, to offer this sacrifice which you have commanded us to make in memory of you, that I may feed upon your body and blood; that I may grow in grace and be your true servant.

I offer this Mass for………………. and all who need our prayers.

Bless the priest who will say Mass and all who join us in this celebration, that we may share in the worship of heaven which we offer to your Father in the power of the Holy Spirit, with all the angels and saints. We make this prayer for your honour and glory. Amen.

When the bell rings, please stand

As the clergy and servers make their way to the Altar we sing the following hymn:

All things bright and beautiful,

All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful

The Lord God made them all.

2 Each little flower that opens,

Each little bird that sings,

He made their glowing colours,

He made their tiny wings.

3 The purple-headed mountain,

The river running by,

The sunset and the morning,

That brightens up the sky.

4 The cold wind in the winter,

The pleasant summer sun,

The ripe fruits in the garden,

He has made every one.

5 The tall trees in the greenwood,

The meadows for our play,

The rushes by the water,

To gather every day.

6 He gave us eyes to see them,

And lips that we might tell,

How great is God Almighty,

Who has made all things well.

                            C.F.Alexander 1818-95

                            Tune All things bright and beautiful

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit

THE COLLECT

O God, Father of mercies, whose Only Begotten Son, as he hung upon the Cross, chose the Blessed Virgin Mary, his Mother, to be our Mother also. Grant, we pray, that with her loving help your church may be more fruitful day by day and, exulting in the holiness of her children, may draw to her embrace all the families of the people.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

THE FIRST READING   (Please be seated)

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah:                                                               Isaiah 61:9-11

My people will be famous throughout the nations, their descendants throughout the peoples. All who see them will admit that they are a race who the Lord has blessed. I exult for joy in my God, for he has clothed me in the garments of salvation, he has wrapped me in the cloak of integrity, like a bridegroom wearing his wreath, like a bride adorned in her jewels. For as the earth makes seeds spring up, so will the Lord make both integrity and praise spring up in the sight of the nations.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL HYMN:          (Please remain seated)

Father in heaven thank you for mothers

Loving and caring all the day long.

Thank you for parents, working to feed us,

Mothers and Fathers loving and strong.

Thank you for Mary ‘Blessed among women’

She whom you chose to mother your Son.

Patten of goodness trust and obedience

Help us to love you as she has done.

Guardian of truth the Church is our Mother

Telling of Jesus agent of grace.

Filled with his spirit,

God’s holy family,

Joining his people in every place.

Parents and children, praise God together;

Praise for our homes and all that he gives;

May we serve others as serving Jesus,

Make every home the place where he lives.

                                                                           Anon

                                                                           Tune Bunerssan

THE SECOND READING:

A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians                      Philippians 4:1,4-9

I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord; The Lord is very near.  There is no need to worry, but if there is anything you need, pray for it, asking God for it with prayer and thanksgiving.  The peace of God which is far greater than we can understand will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Finally, fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, then the God of peace will be with you.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION lPease Stand)               Sung

Praise to you, O Christ, king of eternal glory!

Praise to you, O Christ, king of eternal glory!

Here is your mother. And from that hour

the disciple took her into his own home.

Praise to you, O Christ, king of eternal glory!

THE GOSPEL

The Lord be with you.

And with your Spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John:                                      John 19:25-27

Glory to you O Lord

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.  Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, “Woman, this is your son.”  Then to the disciple he said, “This is your mother.”  And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Praise to you, O Christ, king of eternal glory!

THE HOMILY                         (Please sit)

THE NICENE CREED  (Please stand)

I believe in one God,

the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.

God from God,

Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and became man’, all bow.)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL  (Please stand, sit or kneel)

The Celebrant introduces the Prayer of the Faithful

Lord, in your mercy              or               Lord, hear us

Hear our prayer                                    Lord, graciously hear us

The Reader will add:

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with Thee.

Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us Sinners now

and at the hour of our death. Amen

After a short silence, the Celebrant concludes the Prayer of the Faithful.

THE PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS

A Collection will be taken at this point for the mission

and upkeep of this church.

St. Barnabas does need your financial

support to survive, Please consider a regular donation

via the Parish Giving Scheme or Standing order.

Forms are by the north door.

You are also able to pay contactless or by QR code

 on your phone.

The celebrant prepares the altar with gifts of Bread and Wine, they are then censed with incense. The altar, clergy and people are also censed.

1 Sing of Mary meek and lowly,
Virgin-mother pure and mild,
Sing of God's own Son most holy,
Who became her little child.
Fairest child of fairest mother,
God the Lord who came to earth,
Word made flesh, our very brother,
Takes our nature by his birth.

2 Sing of Jesus, son of Mary,
In the home at Nazareth.
Toil and labour cannot weary
Love enduring unto death.
Constant was the love he gave her,
Though he went forth from her side,
Forth to preach, and heal, and suffer,
Till on Calvary he died.

3 Glory be to God the Father;
Glory be to God the Son;
Glory be to God the Spirit;
Glory to the Three in One.
From the heart of blessed Mary,
From all saints the song ascends,
And the Church the strain re-echoes
Unto earth's remotest ends.

                                                        Tune Pleading Saviour

Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty Father.

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

The celebrant sings the prayers over the gifts and we respond:

Amen

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER                                                Sung

The Lord be with you:

And with your spirit

Lift up your hearts:

We lift them up to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

It is right and just.

The celebrant continues to sing the preface until:

SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS                            Sung

Holy, holy, ho-ly, Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the high-est.

Bless’ed is he who comes in the na-me of the Lord.

Hosanna in the high-est.

                                                                          A New People’s Mass

The celebrant continues with the Eucharistic Prayer

The mystery of faith:

Save us, Saviour of the world,

for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free.

The celebrant continues until:

… Through Him, and with Him, and in Him,

O God almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all glory and honour is yours, for ever and ever.

Amen.

At the Saviour’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us Lord, we pray, from every evil; graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever.

THE SIGN OF PEACE

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be with you always:

And with your spirit

THE AGNUS DEI                    Sung

Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world,   have mercy on us.

Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world,   have mercy on us.

Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world,   grant us peace.

                                                                          A New People’s Mass

As the celebrant shows us the consecrated Host he says:

Behold the Lamb of God; behold him who takes away the sins of the world.

Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,

but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

The celebrant first receives the Sacrament and then says the communion antiphon.

All baptised Christians who receive communion in their own churches are welcome

to receive Holy Communion here.

If you require a gluten free host please tell one of the stewards.

When directed please come forward to receive Holy Communion.

If you prefer a blessing, please come forward with your head bowed and arms crossed.

As you receive the Sacrament the Priest / Minister says:

The body of Christ / The blood of Christ.  and we reply  Amen.

During Communion the following hymn is sung

1 My God loves me, His love will never end.

He rests within my heart for my God loves me.

2 His gentle hand, He stretches over me.

Though storm-clouds threaten the day, he will set me free.

3 He comes to me, in sharing bread and wine.

He brings me life that will reach past the end of time.

4 My God loves me, his faithful love endures,

And we will live like his child held in love secure.

5 The joys of love as offerings now we bring.

The pains of love will be lost in the praise we sing.

THE BLESSING AND DISTRIBUTION OF FLOWERS

The celebrant blesses the flowers and places some at the shrine of Our Lady to say ‘Thank You’ to Mary for bringing Jesus in to the world.

 Please come forward to collect flowers during which we sing the following hymn:

 1 Holy Virgin, by God’s decree,
You were called eternally;
That he could give his Son to our race.
Mary, we praise you, hail, full of grace.

Ave, ave, ave, Maria.

2 By your faith and loving accord,
As the handmaid of the Lord,
You undertook God’s plan to embrace.
Mary we thank you, hail, full of grace.

3 Joy to God you gave and expressed,
Of all women none more blessed,
When in mankind your Son took his place.
Mary, we love you, hail, full of grace.

4 Refuge for your children so weak,
Sure protection all can seek.
Problems of life you help us to face.
Mary, we trust you, hail, full of grace.

5 To our needy world of today
Love and beauty you portray,
Showing the path to Christ we must trace.
Mary, our mother, hail, full of grace.

THE BLESSING AND DISMISSAL  (Please stand)

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

The celebrant gives the blessing and we reply:

Amen.

Go forth, the mass is ended.

Thanks be to God.

The celebrant sits to put on incense, then reverences the Altar and makes his way to the Shrine of Our Lady to sing the Angelus Domini.

THE ANGELUS DOMINI

The Angel of the Lord brought tidings to Mary:

And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;

blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord:

Be it unto me according to Thy word.

Hail Mary . . .

And the Word was made Flesh.

And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary . . .

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,

That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:

Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace into our hearts; that as we have known the incarnation of thy Son, Jesus Christ, by the message of an angel, so by his Cross and Passion we may be brought to the glory of His resurrection, through the same Christ, Our Lord.

Amen.

As the clergy and servers leave, we sing the final hymn:

1 To God be the glory, great things he has done,

He gave us Our Lady to mother his Son.

At her spotless conception the angels rejoiced,

So join with all heaven and sing with one voice.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

let the earth hear his voice.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

let the people rejoice.

A glorious light in the dark sky we see;

O lead us to Jesus, sweet Star of the Sea.

2 At a stable in Bethlehem, God came to earth,

And the angels sent shepherds to worship his birth.

The magi brought gifts, as Our Lady looked on

And was bathed in the glory that shone from her Son:

3 At the wedding in Cana, God gave a great sign:

Said the steward to Mary; "We have no more wine."

She turned to her Son and for his help she prayed,

As always he heard her, and came to their aid.

4 As Our Lady stood at the foot of the Cross

And Jesus her Son there redeemed Adam's loss,

A sword pierced her heart, but the tears that she shed

Were turned to great joy when he rose from the dead.

5 At last Mary's time with her children was done.

How could our death hold the Immaculate One?

She was called to the throne of her Saviour above

And he crowned her with glory, so great was his love.

6 The Church is surrounded by storm clouds today,

And many have fallen as heresy's way.

A glorious light in the dark sky we see;

O lead us to Jesus, sweet Star of the Sea.

Prayers for use after Mass

O Lord Jesus Christ you have come into our lives

as a willing guest and humble servant:

Take us and make us yours now and always.

We offer you the time that lies before us;

for your honour and glory. Amen.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me;

Blood of Christ, inebriate me; water from the side of Christ, wash me;

Passion of Christ, strengthen me; O Good Jesus, hear me;

Within thy wounds hide me; suffer me not to be separated from thee;

From the malicious enemy defend me; at the hour of my death call me;

And bid me come to thee; that with thy saints I may praise thee; for all eternity. Amen.

1 Judge Eternal, throned in splendour,
Lord of lords and King of kings,
With your living fire of judgment
Purge this land of bitter things;
Solace all its wide dominion
With the healing of thy wings.

2 Still the weary folk are pining
For the hour that brings release,
And the city’s crowded clangour
Cries aloud for sin to cease,
And the homesteads and the woodlands
Plead in silence for their peace.

3 Crown, O God, your own endeavour;
Cleave our darkness with thy sword;
Feed the faithless and the hungry
With the richness of thy word;
Cleanse the body of this nation
Through the glory of the Lord.
