Prayers for use before Mass

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ I have come here in obedience to your will, to offer this sacrifice which you have commanded us to make in memory of you, that I may feed upon your body and blood; that I may grow in grace and be your true servant.

I offer this Mass for………………. and all who need our prayers.

Bless the priest who will say Mass and all who join us in this celebration, that we may share in the worship of heaven which we offer to your Father in the power of the Holy Spirit, with all the angels and saints. We make this prayer for your honour and glory. Amen.

When the bell rings, please stand

As the clergy and servers make their way to the Altar we sing:

1 Unto us a boy is born!
The King of all creation,
Came he to a world forlorn,
The Lord of every nation.

2 Cradled in a stall was he
With sleepy cows and asses;
But the very beasts could see
That he the world surpasses.

3 Herod then with fear was filled:
"A prince," he said, "in Jewry!"
And all the little boys he killed
At Bethl'hem in his fury.

4 Now may Mary's son, who came
So long ago to love us,
Lead us all with hearts aflame
Unto the joys above us

5 Alpha and Omega he!
Now let the organ thunder,
While the choir with peals of glee
Shall rend the air asunder.

The First Reading:  (Please be seated)

A reading from the first book of Samuel:                                 1 Samuel 1:20-22, 24-28

In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, ‘I have asked for him from the Lord.’

The man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, ‘As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord and dwell there for ever.’

And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. And the child was young. Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. And she said, ‘Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.’ And he worshipped the Lord there.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Responsorial Psalm:

Blessed are they who dwell in your house, O Lord.

How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts.

My soul is longing and yearning, is yearning for the courts of the Lord.

My heart and my soul ring out their to God, the living God. R.

They are happy, who dwell in your house, for ever singing your praise.

They are happy whose strength is in you, they walk with ever growing strength. R.

O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob.

Turn your eyes, O God, our shield; look on the face of your anointed. R.

The Second Reading:

A reading from the first letter of St John:                                    1 John 3:1-2, 21-24

Beloved: See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Acclamation:    (Please Stand)            Sung

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Open our hearts, O Lord,

that we may pay attention to the words of your Son.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

The Gospel:

The Lord be with you.

And with your Spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Luke:                     Luke 2:41-52

Glory to you O Lord

The parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. After three days they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, ‘Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.’ And he said to them, ‘Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’ And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favour with God and man.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Please sit for the homily.

The Nicene Creed:  (Please stand)

I believe in one God,

the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.

God from God,

Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and became man’, all bow.)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with Thee.

Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us Sinners now

After a short silence,

the Celebrant concludes the Prayer of the Faithful.

1 In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone:
Snow had fallen,
Snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter,
Long, ago.

2 Our God, heaven cannot hold him

nor earth sustain;

Heaven and earth shall flee away

When he comes to reign:

In the bleak midwinter

A stable place sufficed

The Lord God almighty,

Jesus Christ.

3 Enough for him, whom Cherubim

Worship night and day.

A breast full of milk

And a manger full of hay:

Enough for him, whom angels

Fall down before,

The ox and ass and camel

Which adore.

4 Angels and Arch-angels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and Seraphim
Thronged the air
But only his Mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshiped the beloved
With a kiss.

5 What can I give him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would give a lamb;
If I were a wise man
I would do my part;

Yet what I can I give him

Give my heart.

Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty Father.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

It is right and just.

The Celebrant continues to sing the preface:

The Sanctus and Benedictus:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth, heaven and earth, are full of your glory,

Lord God of hosts.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed, blessed is he who comes, blessed, blessed is he who comes,

blessed is he, blessed is he, who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

                                                                                Gathering Mass Paul Inwood

The Celebrant continues with the Eucharistic Prayer

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, we proclaim your Death, O Lord and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

                                                                                Gathering Mass Paul Inwood

The Celebrant continues until:

… Through Him, and with Him, and in Him,  Amen.

O God almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,  Amen.

all glory and honour is yours, for ever and ever.  Amen.

                                                                                                Lourdes Doxology

At the Saviour’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us Lord, we pray, from every evil; graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever.

The Sign of Peace:

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be with you always:

And with your spirit

The Agnus Dei:                  Sung

Jesus, Lamb of God, the word made flesh:

Jesus, Son of God, come down on earth:.

Hear our prayer, have mercy; hear our prayer, have mercy;

give us your peace.

Jesus, King of glory, Prince of Peace:

Jesus, shining in our darkened world:

Hear our prayer, have mercy; hear our prayer, have mercy;

give us your peace.

Jesus, Lord of life and Lord of light:

Jesus, here in form of bread and wine:

Hear our prayer, have mercy; hear our prayer, have mercy;

give us your peace.

                                                                                Communion Song 3 Paul Inwood

As the Celebrant shows us the consecrated Host he says:

Behold the Lamb of God; behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,

but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

The Celebrant first receives the Sacrament and then says the communion antiphon.

All baptised Christians who receive communion in their own churches are welcome to receive Holy Communion here.

If you require a gluten free host please tell one of the stewards.

When directed please come forward to receive Holy Communion.

If you prefer a blessing, please come forward with your head bowed and arms crossed.

As you receive the Sacrament the priest/minister says:

The body of Christ.  /  The Blood of Christ and we reply  Amen.

During Communion the following hymn is sung

1 Jesus, good above all other,
Gentle child of gentle mother,
In a stable born our brother,
Give us grace to persevere.

2 Jesus, cradled in a manger,
For us facing every danger,
Living as a homeless stranger,
Make we Thee our King most dear.

3 Jesus, for Thy people dying,
Risen Master, death defying,
Lord in Heav’n, Thy grace supplying,
Keep us by Thine altar near.

4 Jesus, who our sorrows bearest,
All our thoughts and hopes Thou sharest,
Thou to man the truth declarest;
Help us all Thy truth to hear.

5 Lord, in all our doings guide us;
Pride and hate shall ne’er divide us;
We’ll go on with Thee beside us,
And with joy we’ll persevere!

The Prayer after Communion

The Celebrant says the prayer and we reply

Amen.

Any Banns of Marriage and Notices may be read at this point.

The Blessing and Dismissal  (Please stand)

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

The Celebrant gives the blessing and we reply:

Amen.

Go forth, the mass is ended.

Thanks be to God.

The Celebrant sits to put on incense, he blesses it and then the procession makes its way to the crib for the Angelus Domini as we sing the following carol:

1 Of the Father’s love begotten,
Ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega,
He the source, the ending He,
Of the things that are

and have been,
And that future years shall see,
Evermore and evermore.

2 By his word was all created;
He commanded, it was done:
Heaven and earth and depth

of ocean,
Universe of three in one,

All that grows beneath the shining

Of the light of moon and sun;

Evermore and evermore.

Please turn to face the Christmas Crib.

The Angelus Domini:

The Angel of the Lord brought tidings to Mary:

And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;

blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord:

Be it unto me according to Thy word.

Hail Mary . . .

And the Word was made Flesh.

And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary . . .

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,

That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:

Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace into our hearts; that as we have known the incarnation of thy Son, Jesus Christ, by the message of an angel, so by his Cross and Passion we may be brought to the glory of His resurrection, through the same Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

The Crib is censed with incense and as the clergy and servers leave the carol continues:

3 Blessed was the day for ever

When the virgin, full of grace,

By the Holy Ghost conceiving,

Bore the Saviour of our race,

And the child, the world’s redeemer,

First revealed his sacred face:

Evermore and evermore.

4 O ye heights of heaven, adore Him;
Angels and archangels sing!
Every creature, bow before Him,
Singing praise to God our King.
Let no earthly tongue be silent,
All the world with homage ring,
Evermore and evermore.

5 Glory be to God the Father,

Glory be to God the Son,

Glory to the Holy Spirit,

Persons three, yet Godhead one.

Glory be from all creation

While eternal ages run:

Evermore and evermore.

Prayers for use after Mass

O Lord Jesus Christ you have come into our lives

as a willing guest and humble servant:

Take us and make us yours now and always.

We offer you the time that lies before us;

for your honour and glory. Amen.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me;

Blood of Christ, inebriate me; water from the side of Christ, wash me;

Passion of Christ, strengthen me; O Good Jesus, hear me;

Within thy wounds hide me; suffer me not to be separated from thee;

From the malicious enemy defend me; at the hour of my death call me;

And bid me come to thee; that with thy saints I may praise thee; for all eternity. Amen.

1 Judge Eternal, throned in splendour,
Lord of lords and King of kings,
With your living fire of judgment
Purge this land of bitter things;
Solace all its wide dominion
With the healing of thy wings.

2 Still the weary folk are pining
For the hour that brings release,
And the city’s crowded clangour
Cries aloud for sin to cease,
And the homesteads and the woodlands
Plead in silence for their peace.

3 Crown, O God, your own endeavour;
Cleave our darkness with thy sword;
Feed the faithless and the hungry
With the richness of thy word;
Cleanse the body of this nation
Through the glory of the Lord.
